This story takes place at the New Market Battlefield in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia. Benjy Stark is visiting his grandmother in the town of New Market when he meets a ghost named Cadet William Hugh McDowell who was killed in the battle of New Market during the Civil War. Hugh is haunted by the fact that he lost his grandfather’s gold watch during the battle - a family heirloom that was intended to be passed down to future generations.
