Maya and her brother is sent to live with their paternal grandparents at age three and four.  They were eventually welcomed by the town of Stamps, Arkansas. They lived in the back of the store their grandmother owned in the center of life in the Negro community of the town.  After being sent back and forth between several families and Maya living with physical and sexual abuse along with feelings of ugliness she finds herself homeless.  She and her brother go through so much stuff together and many emotional rollercoasters.  Will they tough it out of do they give up on life?  Maya does not see herself as a lady so she explores information about lesbianism.
