This is the story of a poor sharecropper and his family. The family dog gets shot when the father is arrested for stealing ham. The father is sent off to work camp and the son starts out on treks looking for him. He doesn't find him but runs in to a teacher who befriends him and teaches him to read. When the father returns maimed from a quarry accident, there is some hope but he soon dies. Through it all, the boy has a faithful friend in his dog Sounder.
