Set in Australia, The Pumpkin Runner tells the story of sheep rancher, Joshua Summerhayes who decides to enter the 12th Annual Koala-K 900-kilometer Race from Melbourne to Sydney.  With yellow dog at his side, Joshua loads up Aunt Mille and tons of pumpkins in a borrowed jeep and sets out to run a spell.  You see, the luscious golden pumpkins give Joshua the “extra spark” he needs to win the race.  Even though he’s “up in years”, Joshua succeeds and finishes the race two days and two hours early.  Based on the true story of Cliff Young, a 61 year-old farmer from Victoria, Australia who won the 875-kilometer race between Sydney and Melbourne in 1983.  (Cerese Long, cclong2001@yahoo.com, White Knoll Middle School)
