IN THE FORESTS OF THE NIGHT
New York : Delacorte Press, 1999
IL YA

Although Risika looks only seventeen years old, she is actually over 300 years old.  During the day, she sleeps in a shaded bedroom in her home in Massachusetts, but at night, she hunts for her prey in the desolate and dangerous streets of New York City.

Can anyone guess what Risika is?  (Hopefully, someone in my audience of middle schoolers will guess correctly that she is a vampire.)

But her world is way different than most of us imagine from the stories and movies we've seen.  Listen to the way Risika describes her life:

Read the last 2 pages of Chapter 1, Now beginning with:   "My home is near the center of Concord…"

Although she is a powerful vampire, someone from Risika's past has come back to haunt her; someone she refuses to show her fear to. Will they be able to form some kind of truce, or will she and Aubrey be forced to fight to the death?

Read In the Forests of the Night to find out how Risika and her kind live and survive in the 21st century.
