ABRAHAM'S BATTLE : A NOVEL OF GETTYSBURG
New York : Atheneum Books for Young Readers, 1999.
IL 5-8, RL 4.8
ISBN 0689817797
Abraham Small, an older ex-slave, lives near the town of Gettysburg during the Civil War. When a major battle threatens the area, Abraham volunteers to use his mule, Charity, as an ambulance driver. By chance he meets Lamar Cooper, a Confederate soldier, before the battle. They find they have much in common, as two Southern reared men; later, they have much in common due to simple humanity. Read this book for a different, interesting view of this famous Civil War battle.  (Jean Bellavance bellavance@erols.com for Pennsylvania Young Reader's Choice Awards, 2003)
