Lije Tulley is living in Kansas in the year 1861. The Civil War is just beginning and Lije is part of the abolitionist movement who help free slaves. He rides with the Kansas Jayhawkers on several raids to free slaves. When Lije is asked to spy for the Jayhawkers, he agrees to change his name and live with a Southern family and join the southern bushwhackers. Lije is successful in passing important information on to the Jayhawkers. When he learns that the bushwhackers are planning a raid on his hometown, he must make a desperate choice. Should he keep his cover and continue his important work or should he risk everything to warn the town?
