Blackwood, Gary L.
THE DYING SUN
New York : Atheneum, 1989.
IL 5-8

A western pioneer survival story set in the United States in the year 2050 when the sun's reduced warmth has caused winter to creep as far south as Missouri. It's winter from October to April. The U.S. has moved the Capitol to Houston and there's a cure for the common cold. James and Robert are sick of the mugging and pollution of big city living in Mexico, which the U.S. has overrun, and they have struck out without money to locate James' family who have left earlier to homestead in Missouri, much like the pioneers, they get stuck with a reckless, lawless, rugged individualist who appropriates whatever it is he needs to survive. The boys aren't sure what would happen to them if they decline the offer of a lift up north.
