John Washington is an historian who returns to his hometown to visit his guardian. The old man tells John stories of John's father and grandfather. These stories tell the story of slavery and what life was like for African Americans after they were freed. Through listening to the old man's retelling of his own family's history, John comes to understand the deep resentment that African Americans feel and appreciate the toughness and resourcefulness that was necessary to survive.
