Told in a series of letters to her dead mother, we see how life can be cruel when children have little love.  To help her through the loneliness and grief, the letters to her mother are all that keep her going.  We find out how her aunt treats her a little more than a servant, how her cousins call her names, and how her grandmother abuses her.  Through it all, she does manage to find a friend and the two help each other.
