In the Winter Hero by the Collier Brothers, Justin Conkey is a boy growing up just after the Revolutionary War. Justin's Dad was killed in the Revolution and his mother was sickly so when she died, he was sent to live with his uncle. His older sister Mary married Peter, a hero in the Revolutionary War. Mary soon became pregnant and could not help around the farm so Justin came to live with them. Mary and her family owe a huge debt that cannot be paid off. The head taxer, Mattoon then comes and takes Peter's oxen. Not being able to run the farm without the oxen, Peter and Justin go to Mattoon to plead and Justin ends up being a house boy to Mattoon and Peter gets the oxen back. While Justin is there a war seems to be brewing. Justin longs to be a hero. Will he ever get his chance? (Rona Gutzky korin85@yahoo.com.)
