Jim Ugly is a dog. This dog is the loyal companion of Jakeís dad. Jakeís dad was buried less than a week ago, June 3, 1894 in Nevada. Jake and his dad had come to Nevada to stay with Jakeís cousin Aurora and her husband Axie. Jake and his dad left California because a bounty hunter was trying to kill Jake and get some diamonds that were supposedly missing. Jakeís dad had a bullet wound in his shoulder, so he left Jake with his cousin and went to a bigger town looking for a doctor. Jakeís dad never came home. His dadís dog, Jim Ugly, kept searching for his master. Jake tells the story throughout this book. Hereís Jake talking: (Read some of page 9). When Jake takes the dog to the cemetery, Jim Ugly doesnít smell his ownerís scent anywhere near the grave site. Jake realizes that the funeral was just a show. The body was never really found.
