Twelve year old Emily lives in Johannesburg during the time of apartheid.  Emily's life is sheltered from the injustice that is practiced upon the black residents of South Africa.  But her life is filled with fighting nonetheless.  Her parents are always fighting.  Emily spends more and more time with Buza, a family employee who delights Emily with stories from Zulu folklore.  And now a family of wandering Australians have come to stay with the family.  These gypsies offer an exciting distraction for Emily and her sister but they have no way of knowing how much misery these strangers will bring.
