Referred to in "Girls are People Too". This is Book 3 in a triology about a new race of powerful thinkers who can trip to the future by bonding into units. If you haven't read the first books, the early chapters can be hard to understand as new vocabulary is used that had been explained in the previous books. By Chapter 7, it is clear that a unit of time travelers are not sure of the reason for their trip, but in the process of discovering it, they lead back a gathering of leftover rebels from Dustland to space controlled by self-perpetuating computers. Mission becomes clear that the computer needs one of the unit's gifts to allow choice between living in Dustland or in controlled environment and to keep memories.
