(2 booktalks)

Booktalk #1

Young Bear has found a strange object.  He takes it back to his den and ponders what it might be.  It's a piece of paper with some tiny marks on it.  He spends time trying to figure out what it is unsuccessful.  One day, he wonders further from his home than usual and sees a lady sitting on a chair looking at paper with the same type of tiny marks.  She seems to understand the marks.  Will Bear ever understand?

Booktalk #2

Bear finds a slip of paper covered in scribbles which he finds quite interesting although he doesn’t understand its meaning. One day he comes upon a woman sitting in the sun holding papers with scribbles just like his. Secretly he watches her until she notices him and invites him to come listen as she reads. He likes her story so much that he returns each day for more. All is well until fall arrives and he finds the woman packing to leave the cabin for winter. Bear is sad, but discovers that his new found summer friend has left him a gift. Can you guess what the surprise might be?  (Jean B. Bellavance for Pennsylvania Young Reader's Choice Awards, 2004-2005)
