Sixteen-year-old Sally Jo Walker, known as Jody, is married and traveling with her husband when it happens.  Without warning, Bobby James takes out his anger on Jody's face.  She never saw this coming and decides she doesn't want it to ever happen again.  Now she's stranded in a small town in Florida with only $20 to her name.  She doesn't even have any clothes since they are all in Bobby James' car.  After securing a job as a dishwasher at Thelma's Cafe and finds a way to survive.  Along the way, she collects some very unusual friends.
