Fifteen-year-old Green is the only surviving member of her family after a terrible disaster hits the city where they had gone for the day. Green struggles to survive: physically, because nothing will grow under the thick layer of ashes and emotionally, while she looks for answers to why she was the only one left, she tattoos designs into her skin. Eventually, after a series of encounters, Green starts to relearn the lessons of love and is able to heal enough to tell her story.  (Marybeth R., Hickory Creek Middle School, Frankfort, IL)
