This is a beautiful book and a tribute to African American history.   E.B. Lewis illustrates Langston Hughes' marvelous poem.  The words are strong and the illustrations add to the feeling.  Hughes wrote this powerful poem as a teenager in 1919, during a period of time known as the Harlem Renaissance.  This was long before the Civil Rights movement and Hughes' work captures the pride of his race.
SUBJECTS:     African Americans -- Poetry.
