In this animal fantasy adventure, the young otter Deyna from Redwall Abbey is kidnapped by a vicious tribe of vermin, the Juskarath. The chieftain, Sawney Rath, raises Deyna as a son, but the grown Deyna has none of his adoptive father’s villainous tendencies. The otter leaves the clan to seek freedom and happiness and has a series of intriguing adventures. As the prologue states, this tale has “Sadness and joy, comedy and tragedy, with a little mystery sprinkled throughout and quite a good does of rousing action.” Jacques is a spellbinding storyteller.
