Central Texas 1899. Calpurnia is growing up in a large family with 6 boys.  She knows she is a disappointment to her mother since she really doesn’t like to do the things that girls are supposed to do. She doesn't want to sew or cook or clean the house.  She is more interested in learning about animals and the rivers and keeping notes on what she sees.  She wants to become a scientist and learn about nature but that is not something that a girl can do in 1899.
