"The voices, the strange, anguished voices, woke him from a deep sleep the first time it happened.  And the second time too.

Both nights he stayed under the covers and tried to figure out what was going on downstairs.  Who were these frenzied people in the parlor?  Surely not his mother and aunt.   Who?"

13-year-old Nathaniel G. Makeworthy Fuller  lives with this mother and aunt in New York City.  He wants to know what these noises are but he hopes that they will stop while they are away for the summer.  But this summer, his aunt has decided to stay in town.  And now Nate finds himself with a job working as a dogsbody in a hattery.  Here he meets the famous Harry Houdini!  And he tells him the story of the mysterious Mr. Trane who is visiting his aunt.  The two form a team to find the answers to what is going on in the house.
