This is the fictionalized diary of 12 year old Zipporah "Zippy" Feldman. Zippy and her family have escaped from Russia and have settled in New York in 1902. Life is hard for the new immigrants. Zippy is put into a young grade because her English isn't very good. She dreams of becoming an actress and finds work as a prop girl in a Yiddish theater. Through the good times and bad, the family struggles to hold on to their Jewish faith although it is not quite certain if they will succeed.
