It's the revolution. Your father is a sea captain whose ship has gone down in a storm. His solution to keeping you fed is to indenture you to some ship suppliers' warehouse. Your "life" at age 12 is becalmed until you are 21. Nat doesn't stay becalmed long. He studies math, Latin, corrects almanac charts and gets himself educated enough to become second mate in charge of his own duty. In this year when everyone is talking of the stars, this is a neat book to get into because of Nat's fascination with the stars.
