Every year, I act as judge for our school spelling bee.  I love the dedication of the kids and marvel at their ability.  Thirteen year old Karlene believes that winning the spelling bee will lead the way to bigger and better things.  She lives for words and her new teacher is helping her reach her goal of winning the county spelling bee.  But all around her, things are swirling out of control.  Her father is alcoholic, her sister is married to a creep and her mother is depressed.  Through it all, Karlene stays focused on her goal.
