ALIEN IN A BOTTLE
New York : HarperCollins, 2004.

A few years ago when I was in Venice, I visited a glass blower.  It is an amazing thing to watch.  I loved watching the glass go from almost a liquid to a beautiful glass or bowl or vase.  It is a demanding craft to learn and perform.  In this book, eighth grader Sean wants to become a glass blower.  He has the opportunity to learn if he can attend the museum high school but his parents are against it.  The materials are expensive and the craft can be dangerous.  They also don't see a future in glass blowing.  So what does this have to do with aliens?  While Sean is looking in a dumpster for discarded glass to work on, he finds a very interesting bottle.  Out from the bottle comes Dinn Tauro, Tagg, and Squeeto.  These three are aliens who complicate Sean's life more than he could ever imagine.
