16 year old Pi Patel is the son of a zookeeper in India.  Pi is constantly trying out different religions to see which one best suits him.  When his father decides to move the family to Canada, they pack up all of the zoo animals and ride with them on a huge ship.  Part way through their voyage the ship wrecks and Pi finds himself in a life boat in the ocean with several of the zoo animals: a wounded zebra, a hyena, an orangutan and a Bengal Tiger named Richard Parker.  No other humans survived.  So they are adrift in the ocean for endless days.  And all of them are hungry and thirsty.  (Davinna Artibey, Denver Center for International Studies, DPS, CO)
