O'Dell, Scott
THE 290
Boston : Houghton Mifflin, 1976.
IL 5+
ISBN 0395247373
Laird's of Liverpool is a shipbuilding firm in London. During the Civil War, there were naval battles that were fought with ships built in Europe. The 290, aka Alabama, was one such ship. A young Southerner who had been sent to London by his father, a slave trader, is apprenticed to Mr. Bromley, the 290's designer. This story is about Jim Lynne's trip on the 290's maiden voyage, under Raphael Semmes, a real Civil War captain. For an accurate tale of life on the sea and the differing attitudes of men on the Confederate side, read "The 290" by Scott O'Dell.
