What is the young man on the cover holding? (a skull with a bullet hole)

This starts with a 14 year old Apache Indian named Coyote Runs taking part in his tribe's first raid as part of his process to become a man.  Sadly he is only a man for a short time . . .

Fast forward a little over 100 years to 15 year old Brennan camping in a Texas canyon.  Under his sleeping bag he finds a skull with a bullet hole in the forehead. He becomes obsessed with finding out what happened, to whom it belonged, and when.

The chapters alternate between these two boys' stories.  Coyote Runs and Brennan have a mystical link and neither will be at peace until Brennan solves the mystery of the skull and returns it to an ancient sacred place.  (Davinna Artibey, Center for International Studies, Denver Public Schools, CO)
