Sarny is a slave on a plantation with a very cruel owner. One day, a new slave arrives. Nightjohn knows how to read and write. Slaves are not allowed to learn but Nightjohn secretly teaches them the alphabet. Sarny is so excited about learning that she is not careful practicing her words. She is caught by her owner who demands to know who taught her how to write. Nightjohn comes forward and is punished for teaching. He is told never to teach again. Is this the end of Nightjohn's teaching?
