This starts off as a book about friends , one strong, the other a follower. We watch Bryan's uneasiness at always doing what Flip wants. Flip has a thing for publicity and excitement and when the boys discover a dead body, Flip milks it for what it's worth. In their romps they discover they are followed by Alvin, a nothing in their class. He leaves them messages, gives them gifts from his Nazi collection and, scared by them, he runs over a trestle and falls to his death. Bryan has grown from the experience and understands he is not like Flip, and doesn't want to be.
