Do you know there is a mammal that wears an armor?  It’s really true. There is such an animal and it is called an armadillo.  There are several types of armadillos.  Some are very large, like the amazing giant armadillo which can grow to four feet and has huge claws. Others are quite small growing to only 7inches long.  And then you have some armadillos than can roll themselves up into perfectly tight balls for protection. Some armadillos can jump up high in the air up to three feet high when they get scared.  Some people keep them as pets, but they don’t make very good pets. They like to sleep during the day inside holes in the ground and are active during the night. They dig up holes in the ground with their powerful claws and some people complain they mess up their gardens, but they can be very helpful in controlling insect pests since they eat insects with their long tongues. Find more about these unique, curious-looking creatures.  (May Harn Liu, Thomas Cooper Library, University of South Carolina, Columbia, SC)
