Have you ever heard of nomes?  They are small creatures that are only about four inches tall.  This particular band of nomes are living in a department store.  They have lived beneath the floorboards for as long as anyone can remember.  As a matter of fact, they don't even know that there is a world beyond the store.  But then  mysterious visitors arrive.  Leading the Outsiders is a young nome by the name of Masklin.  The Outsiders have come to warn the store nomes that they are in danger.  The store is going to be demolished.  The nomes must escape.  But where will they go?  What will they do?  And what is that mysterious black square called The Thing?  Originally published as three separate volumes, the triology is now contained in this one volume.
