Maybelle is a cockroach who lives in her cozy little home under the Peabody's refrigerator.  She knows the rule “When it’s light, stay out of sight”.  So Maybelle comes out only at night and eats the crumbs and spills from the kitchen floor.  But Maybelle is no ordinary cockroach and she dreams of something better!  Just once, Maybelle would like to eat her dinner from a real plate and taste food that has never fallen on the floor.  Maybelle’s friend Henry the flea thinks this is a BAD idea and warns Maybelle to be happy with what she has because if she is seen the BUG MAN will come.  Will Maybelle make do with the food that spills on the floor? Or, will she face the danger and take a chance for what she wants?  Find out what happens to Maybelle the Cockroach in “Maybelle in the Soup”  by Katie Speck.  (Lisa Wegner, Youth Services Director, Waunakee Public Library)
