Booktalk #1

Zach Wahhsted is living on the edge.  As he sits in the coffee shop waiting for his mother, his life takes a dramatic turn.  Two young men with guns come in to rob the store.  As they are about to leave, the police show up and surround the building.  Zach and the other customers are taken hostage.  The two teens with the guns are obviously confused about what to do.  They hadn't expected the robbery to go so wrong.  And now they are in the back room of the coffee shop with an odd assortment of hostages including Zach.  Zach who is due to get his medicine.  Zach who has schizophrenia.  Zach who needs his medicine.  If he doesn't, the voices will start and Zach will have no control over what happens next.

Booktalk #2

Zach has problems. First, he is caught in the middle of a holdup. Second, he is schizophrenic and needs his meds.Third, his schizophrenia causes him to exist in two worlds: the world of Dirtbag and Rat in which he is a “wasteoid;” and the everyday world where he is that weird kid or untrustworthy idiot. So when the holdup goes bad, Zach offers to be held hostage, not realizing the danger he is in.  Black-eyed Susan Award nominee 2005-2006
