Alec was a slave on a plantation.  He was just a boy so he did not have to work in the fields like many of the older slaves.  He also got to know the granddaughter of the plantation owner.  When she gets it into her head to teach Alec to read, no one thinks it's a good idea.  It is illegal to teach slaves to read.  But Miss Zephie was determined that he would learn and he would go to Vermont and be free.  Will Alec ever realize his dream?
