Trapped Between the Lash and the Gun is the story of a kid named Jordan who is convinced to join a gang by a really slick, but creepy gang leader.  Jordan has to steal an old watch from his grandfather in order to buy a gun to get into the gang, so on the night that he is taking off to the pawn shop with the watch, he is running through the city when suddenly he is standing in the middle of a grove of trees with birds singing around him and paddyrollers driving by looking for runaway slaves!  How can he get back?

(This book has an incredible author's note.  It's not often when an author's note has me gasping out loud, but this one did.)  (New Hampshire Great Stone Face Committee)
