Through the diary of young Jim Hay, we get to see what life was like for a young boy who went to war.  Jim was too young to enlist in World War I, but when his father is killed in the war, Jim and his friends lie about their ages and enlist.  At first, life in the army is rather boring and tedious.  As they begin to see action, we see a change in Jim and his view of the war.  When Jim is involved in one of the bloodiest battles in the war, we see the horrors of war through the eyes of a teenager.
